VIVAnews – Mount Tambora sees higher intensities of volcanic activities, increasing its status to the alert level 3 (Siaga). The Regional Disaster Mitigation Agency (BPBD) of West Nusa Tenggara prepares two evacuation routes to anticipate unexpected events in Pekat Subdistrict, Dompu Regency, and Tambora Subdistrict.
Chief of the Regional Disaster Mitigation Agency of West Nusa Tenggara, Husnuddin, said the routes are aimed at helping refugees to avoid hot clouds and volcanic materials.
The routes readied in Pekat Subdistrict use Kempo Village overland road while those opened in Tambora Subdistrict use Piong Village road. The evacuation route connecting Tambora District and Piong village spans 50 kilometers and can be covered in 2 hours.
“The number of Tambora residents is less than 7,000. It would need a lot of ships to take sea evacuation. Therefore, despite the poor condition, overland routes are more preferred,” Husnuddin told VIVAnews.
BPBD of West Nusa Tenggara has deployed a quick-response team to the spot along with technical equipments including GPS, trail and rescue cars. The team immediately built a main shelter located at Pekat Subdistrict Office. In addition, BPBD West Nusa Tenggara has used a field in Doropeti village for helicopter pad. The location will be used as point of air evacuation.
Husnuddin said currently several quick-response team members were assigned to socialize the latest information on Mt Tambora’s situation.
His party has also deployed officers to monitor the journey of four Volcanology and Geologic Disaster Mitigation Center (PVMB) officers heading to Tambora, Bima.
“We still maintain communication with Mt Tambora monitoring post and PVMB. The status is still “alert level 3”. Evacuation is not yet necessary,” he said.
In the mean time, Mt Tambora Monitoring Post Head Abdul Haris, said that currently Mt Tambora has not showed serious activities. The observation on the mount’s activities was hampered by clouds. The post, located in Doropeti village, is 90 kilometers away from Doro Afi Toi crater. “The situation around Doropeti is normal,” he said.
