1000 Families in W Sumatra Facing Landslide

VIVAnews - The refugees of the West Sumatra earthquake in Nagari Tanjung Sani and Bayur (around Maninjau), Tanjung Raya Subdistrict, Agam Regency, are threatened with landslide.

According to Coordinator of Disaster Mitigation Center of West Sumatra Ade Edwar, most of them inhabit steep and landslide-prone hills. "The regional government is expected to pay attention to the recommendation made by geologists saying that the the area is dangerous," he told VIVAnews on Tuesday, Nov 10.

The lakeside region of Maninjau Lake is considered prone to land movement. Bad weather which has taken place this past one week may turn the region into a mass grave.

Technically, according to Ade, after the 7.9 on the Richter Scale earthquake trembled West Sumatra, some hills in the province are cracking. The coming rainy season will multiply the chance of land erosion in the area.

"Within the next six months to one year, the hills may not be stable," said Ade, a geologist.

He emphasized that the government should prepare temporary evacuation camp which is free from landslide.
