Flooding May Hit 108 Schools in Jakarta

VIVAnews - Heavy rain that has been pouring down in Jakarta over the last few days concerns students whose schools are located in flood-prone areas. They are worried that their classrooms would be covered with water just like they were last year.

At 122 Junior High School, North Jakarta puddles always inundate their classrooms on rainy seasons which disrupt their learning activities.

Based on the data of Jakarta Education Agency, 108 schools are within the areas that are prone to floods. Twenty six schools are located in East Jakarta, 12 schools in Central Jakarta, 66 schools in North Jakarta, two schools in West Jakarta and two schools in South Jakarta. The schools are ranging from elementary to high schools.

Head of Jakarta Education Agency, Taufik Yudi Mulyanto said various efforts have been reinforced to anticipate flooding in schools situated in prone areas such as the 122 Junior High School.

“There are a lot of schools situated in flood-prone areas which hampers the access to the schools and their learning activities,” Mulyanto said as published on Jakarta Provincial Government’s website.

The Education Agency also urges school faculties to prepare additional assignment for the students.

Sometimes, several school buildings are used as shelters when floods are occurring. Due to this condition, the schools are forced to close.

“When it happens, schools let their students to stay home and give them homework and assignment to do,” Mulyanto said.

Head of Jakarta Education Agency’s Infrastructure Division, Didi Sugandi supports the revelation. According to him, there were some schools used as temporary shelters in 2008.

“I don’t know which schools will be used this year,” he said.

However, Sugandi said the school flooding was caused by issues in their surroundings, not because they are located on low grounds.
