Economic-Class Train to Be Removed in 2011

VIVAnews - Jakarta train passengers will soon be able to enjoy more convenient trips. PT KRL Commuter Jabodetabek is planning to replace all of the non-air-conditioned trains with the air-conditioned ones at least by 2011.

“The non-air-conditioned trains will be gone,” KRL Commuter Jabodetabek President Bambang Wibiyanto said at the State-Owned Enterprises Ministry on Jalan Medan Merdeka Selatan, Jakarta on Thursday, January 7.

Wibiyanto also said the replacement is expected not to cause any increase in ticket price as long as the government could work up the number of public service obligation budget for commuter trains.

“We’ve gathered data which trains will be added and which ones will have price increase. However, the pricing will depend on the negotiation with the government on PSO budget,” he said.

PT INKA is planning to supply additional air-conditioned railway coaches. In order to support operational activities, the company will provide 120 new railway coaches until 2011 with Rp 105 billion worth of budget.

All this time, KRL has been operating economic and business-class trains using railway coaches ordered from Japan. These coaches are now more than 10 years old.
