Using Cellphones While Driving to Be Fined

VIVAnews - As of April 1, 2010, Law No.22/2009 on Traffic and Transportation of which one of its articles implicitly states that using cellphones while driving will be fined by Rp 750 thousand will be imposed.

The said article, 238, mentions that "Any one doing improper activities, conducting other actions, affected by a circumstance which may cause one to lose concentrations while driving as noted in Article 106 section (1) will be subjected to maximum imprisonment of three months or a maximum fine of Rp 750,000 (seven hundreds fifty thousand rupiah)"

The article indeed indirectly points out about the cellphone issue. However, should drivers be caught using cellphones while driving, the police have the right to impose sanction upon them.

Director of Traffic at the Jakarta Police Department Chief Commissioner Condro Kirono claimed that although the law has not specifically sorted out about cellphone usage, drivers are prohibited from using cellphones while driving.

According to Condro, cellphone usage has been universally acknowledged as threatening the safety of road users.
