VIVAnews - In the spirit of the World Intellectual Property Day, Business Software Alliance (BSA), an international organization that runs campaigns against software piracy, encourages the governments in Asia to apply more policies to overcome the issue.

“The Asian governments have to do more and create a conducive legal environment to help local software companies survive,” reads a press release sent to VIVAnews on Monday, April 26.

According to the study conducted by BSA and IDC entitled Global Software Piracy Study, which was released in 2009, the average number of pirated software installed on personal computers in Asia was up to 61 percent with more than US$ 15 billion or Rp 135 trillion of losses.

Meanwhile, the latest annual data from the study will be released on May 11, 2010. However, last year’s data has suggested that piracy is still one of the serious issues in the region.

To celebrate the big day, BSA has also conducted an online campaign against software piracy through a Youtube video.

“Piracy is a collective challenge to software developers, including those in Asia Pacific,” BSA President and CEO, Robert Holleyman says on the video.

The video also includes several Asian software companies, including Zahir International Indonesia sharing their experiences on the cases.

According to Zahir International Indonesia Director, Muhammad Ismail, there are two types of piracy, which are individuals purchasing pirated software from the market and companies utilizing counterfeited software in running their businesses.

“There are companies that work professionally, using pirated software to gain income. They copy the software easily, buy one copy and use it on ten computers. These are the companies that bring most negative impacts to us,” Ismail said.

He also expects full support from the government to battle the crime. A similar view was conveyed by PV Ravindran from Astro-Vision, an astrology software company from India.

“We believe companies like us would survive only if there are conducive environments, supportive government policies and legal assistance. If we can’t overcome piracy, we’ll be through,” Ravindran said.
