Blora Regency was Founded

VIVAnews - 259 years ago today, on 11 December 1749, Blora Regency was formally founded. Blora is located in the northeastern part of Central Java, Indonesia. The regency was founded by the VOC (the Dutch East Indies Company) after they wrested the north coast area of Java from Mataram Kingdom.

In 19th century, a certain mystical religious sect called Saminism flourished in Blora. The sect was headed by a Javanese peasant, Surantika Samin, and reached its height in early 20th century. Saminism was famous for its protesting behavior. They rejected any formal rules and structure.  Thus, its followers were opposed to the Dutch administration as much as it was against the local rulers.

Blora is a hometown for several famous Indonesians, including Pramoedya Ananta Toer, the famous Indonesian left-wing writer, and L.B. Moerdani, former Commander of Armed Forces during Soeharto’s administration.
