Tsunami Killed 2,500 in Flores

VIVAnews – 16 years ago today, on 12 December 1992, a magnitude 7.5 Ms (USGS) earthquake occurred in Flores Island, East Nusa Tenggara, producing a tsunami that reached its shore in five minutes. 

The tsunami ran inland as much as 300 meters with its waves reaching up to 25 meters. The earthquake caused landslides and earth cracks in several locations. At least 2,500 people were killed, including 1,490 in Maumere, Flores, and 700 in Babi Island.  More than 500 people were seriously injured and 90,000 others were left homeless.

No less than 90 percent of the buildings in Maumere were destroyed by the earthquake and tsunami. And around 50 to 80 percent of the structures in Flores were damaged or destroyed. Similar damage was also occurred in Sumba and Alor Islands.
