The Battle of Ambarawa Ended

VIVAnews - 63 years ago today, on 15 December 1945, the battle of Ambarawa between the Indonesian army and the British armed forces ended.

Based on Civil Affairs Agreement, on 23rd August 1945 the British and the Netherlands forces landed in Sabang, Aceh. A month later, on 15th September 1945, the British army arrived in Jakarta accompanied by a Dutch officer, Dr. Charles van der Plast. The Allied forces arrived in Indonesia to repatriate Japanese soldiers, Allied prisoners of war, and former internees.

However, it turned out that the Allied forces was accompanied by the Dutch soldiers and the NICA (Netherland Indies Civil Administration) officials under the leadership of Dr. Hubertus J van Mook. They intended to reassert the Dutch authority in Indonesia. Having learned this, the Indonesian army immediately organized a resistance to prevent Dutch reoccupation.

The fight continues and on 12th December 1945, Colonel Soedirman, then Indonesian commander of armed forces, led a coordinated attack against the British positions in Ambarawa, driving the British army all the way to Semarang. The fierce battle ended on 15th December 1945. Three days later, to honor him and his struggle, the government conferred an honorary title of “Panglima Besar” or Supreme Commander to Soedirman who was then appointed to the rank of general.
