VIVAnews - Earthquakes have been a main problem in several areas in Indonesia during the past few years. Those include the one in Papua’s Nabire in December 2004, the Aceh Tsunami in December 26, 2004 followed by similar events in Pangandaran, Central Java, Bantul, Yogyakarta and the recent earthquake in Padang.

While other regions in the country were dealing with the disaster, Jakarta has remained safe. The capital city has only been facing minor shocks resulted from underwater low-scale quakes.

However, Presidential Special Staff for Social and Disaster Aids pointed out that Jakarta had also been hit by major earthquakes in 1699, 1780, 1883 and 1903.

The active moving plates along Sumatra’s west coastal areas have raised concern about potential high-scale earthquake in Jakarta.  Although the prediction is not necessarily accurate, it is deemed appropriate for the government to revise the current disaster management system.

“China has gained valuable experience in overcoming earthquakes and floods, just like us, while United States got one in managing critical situation during the hurricane. The experiences are very much relevant to be made as references,” the Staff Assistant Soeyanto says in a press release received by VIVAnews today, June 24.
