VIVAnews - The Internet is capable of triggering social movements especially when mass and online media as well as TVs cover the issues. According to data, Indonesia is listed as top three countries behind the US and UK concerning the number of Facebook users which reach 25 million.
As regards other social media site like Twitter, Indonesian users reach five to six millions in number, third highest behind the US and Japan.
"The year 2009 has been the turning point for Indonesia concerning the Internet, especially social media sites, in controlling issues in the 'real' world,' said IT pundit Enda Nasution in Jakarta, today.
Enda claimed that the year 2009 has been the new milestone in the history of the Internet in Indonesia.
Enda said the annual growth of Internet users in the country reaches 49 percent. "Around 70 percent of the users are those any younger than 35 years of age," he said. "They lead the social movement in Indonesia," he said.
For instance, some bloggers initiated 1,000 books movement which aimed at those who are in need of one but are incapable of buying any.
"There was also Coin A Chance movement, which help advocate the Prita case," said Enda. Last year, a mother of two, Prita Mulyasari was brought to court for allegedly defaming a hospital. She was facing a fine sanction amounting to Rp 202 million. However, people managed to collect coins worth Rp 850 million.
Furthermore, in the aftermath of the hotel bombings in Jakarta, a movement called IndonesiaUnite was introduced by young Indonesians in an effort to fight against terrorism.
