VIVAnews - The House of Representatives (DPR) endorsed the bilateral agreement on military technical cooperation between Indonesia and Russia. The endorsement to the agreement then was expected be followed through a presidential regulation.
"[We] accepted the Commission I's recommendation to the agreement between Indonesia and Russia on military technical cooperation," said Vice Speaker, Mr.Pramono Anung, who was chairing DPR's plenary session in Jakarta on Tuesday, September 21 2010.
Before the approval, the Chairman of the Commission I - which deals with Foreign and Defense affairs - Mr. Mahfudz Siddiq presented the committe's recommendation at the plenary session.
As revealed by Mahfudz, the Commission said that the agreement brings several advantages for Indonesia. "Indonesia can diversify its sources of procuring weaponry system (Alutsista) to strengthen national defence," said Mahfudz.
Moreover, the Indonesian government will be able to improve the quality of its military forces through a series of training. Another benefit is to encourage the upgrading of the national strategic industry, particularly in defense sector.
"The diversification of Alutsista should be made to minimize the dependency on certain suppliers," said Mahfudz. Thus, Mahfudz said, it is necessary for Indonesia in the long term to be independent in Alutsista production.
Given the importance of this bilateral cooperation, the agreement then should proceed into a presidential ruling. "The House's Commission I regard this cooperation as the bilateral military technical cooperation, thus this cooperation can be followed up by the government through the establishment of a new presidential regulation," said Mahfudz.
The plenary agreed that the working committee should be established, by involving the Parliament and the government in order to assess and formulate a classification of the bilateral cooperation in defense sector. (Umi)
