VIVAnews - The southern area of Java and western part of Sumatra are prone to earthquakes and tsunamis. The Indonesia's Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics has installed several tsunami early warning devices. Yet, people living on the dangerous spots must remain cautious of future disasters.

According to researcher on earthquakes and tsunamis at the Indonesian Institute of Sciences (LIPI), seaside communities have to run for higher grounds should massive quakes take place.

Based on LIPI's data, the southern area of Java has recorded quite a list of tsunamis. However, the data has yet to be well-documented. Cilacap, Pangandaran, and Banyuwangi were among the listed areas once thumped by tsunamis.

"On the other hand, data on tsunami in Sumatra has been neatly gathered," he said.

Indonesia, part of the Pacific “ring of fire,” has the largest number of active volcanoes in the world in which earthquakes are frequent. The nation saw great earthquake and tsunami in 2004, which killed more than 200,000 people across Aceh.
