Jakarta Commitment Signed

VIVAnews - As many as 22 countries and multilateral institutions signed the Jakarta Commitment at National Development Planning Agency (Bappenas)'s office on Monday, Jan 12. The signed document concerns a joint agreement to take measures for improving the effectiveness of foreign loans and donations.

Bappenas Deputy on Development Financing Division, Lukita Dinarsyah Tuwo, said that the most significant element of the Jakarta Commitment is ownership.

State Minister of National Development Planning/Head of Bappenas Paskah Suzetta said that the backdrop of the Jakarta Commitment is to bring the commitment of the international community into domestic level aiming at official development assistance (ODA).

"Within the framework, an adaption with such national system as budgeting is needed," Suzetta said. Program adjustment will be carried out to reduce duplication.

Suzetta said that foreign loans and donation for Indonesia are deemed small. "It does not exceed five percent of the State Budget," he said. According to Suzetta, the situation does not disturb financing and development.

"The amount is not important. Effectiveness is what matters most," he said. The emphasize on effectiveness was apparent taking into account the dismissal of the Consultative Groups on Indonesia (CGI) and the acceleration of debts repayment to International Monetary Fund (IMF).

The representatives of the Development Partner signing the Jakarta Commitment include the Asian Development Bank (ADB), Australia, Austria, Canada, European Commission, Finland, France, Agence Française de Dévelopement (AFD), Germany, Italy, Japan, Japan International Cooperation Agency, Korea, the Netherlands, New Zealand, Norway, Poland, Sweden, United Kingdom, United States of America, United Nations, and the World Bank.
