VIVAnews - Victims of Mt Merapi eruptions will be relocated from their hometown as the local administration has set the neighborhood as disaster-prone area.
The refugees will still be staying at alternate shelters situated in various hamlets except Jetis Sumur, Glagaharjo, Cangkringan, Sleman, Yogyakarta hamlets.
"The areas used for alternate shelters will be turned into permanent homes," said Syamsul Maarif on Tuesday.
"New homes will be built," he said.
In addition, the government will set up more infrastructures such as schools, house of worship and cowsheds.
Rp30 million worth of compensation will be paid to the refugees as well.
The government plans to develop the former villagers' land as protected forest. Yet, the refugees will not be prohibited from working on their plantations and animal farms.
Heri Suprapto, Chief of Kepuharjo Village, Cangkringan, Sleman, Yogyakarta, said villagers are reluctant of selling their land to the government. "They do not mind if their hamlets turn into protected forests as long as they can still make use of the land for producing crops and raising animals," he said.
