VIVAnews – Lingkar Survei Indonesia (LSI) recently presented a poll result showing that the image of the ruling Democratic Party is sinking. One of the causes is the public dissapointment over the corruption cases allegedly involving the party’s former treasurer, Muhammad Nazaruddin.
LSI’s chief, Denny JA, regarded Nazaruddin has not yet been skilled to seek funds. This is because of his young age. “His technique is not sophisticated enough,” Denny JA told VIVAnews.com.
The downturn of Democratic Party’s popularity based on surveys is also due to Nazaruddin’s absence for Corruption Eradication Commission’s (KPK) first summon. Nazaruddin did not come for the summon last Friday, June 10, 2011 to become a witness in the case of procurement at National Education Ministry in 2007.
Nazaruddin’s fleeing Indonesia affected the party image. “The issue is prone to be overstated. Not everybody blows the issue up,” said Denny. The general public inquires Nazaruddin’s whereabouts.
“Not returning home, or not brought home. We all don’t know the secret he (Nazaruddin) has,” he said. Asked about Nazaruddin’s return, Denny believes there are two possibilities. “It may be like Gayus, or Nunun,” he said.
Another cause is that Democratic Party is also under the spotlight for the issue of party cadre forming. Democratic Party is in fact a large party, but it is not yet solid. “It has grown big, but is not mature yet,” said Denny.
LSI recorded that prior to the graft case that involved Nazaruddin, Democratic Party’s popularity was the highest (20.5 percent according to January 2011 survey). But after Nazaruddin’s case came to the surface, the popularity dropped 5 points to 15.5 percent.
If the general election were to be held now, LSI stated, Golkar Party would come as the winner with the score of 17.9 percent, followed by Democratic Party with 15.5 percent, and Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle (PDI-P) 14.5 percent. The survey was conducted to 1,200 respondents between June 1-7, 2011 by direct interview and with 2.9 percent of margin of error.
