VIVAnews – PT Perusahaan Listrik Negara (PLN), the state electricity company, confirmed that the rise of electricity tariff (TDL) will not sharply reduce electricity consumption. The consumers’ concern is rather the guarantee of electricity supply by the company.

“This is a dilemma for us, whether such growth must be sustained only because of our limited capacity,” said PLN Managing Director Dahlan Iskan at House of Representatives building, Jakarta, Monday, June 13 2011.

Dahlan said that based on PLN’s experience of removing TDL capping in 2010, electricity tariff rise does not reduce the electricity capacity of the consumers. Electricity consumption after TDL capping was removed in fact kept going up and broke the record of electricity consumption every week.

The surge of electricity consumption happened in eastern part of Indonesia, whose electricity consumption rose 24 percent in spite of the estimated 9 percent. Meanwhile in western Indonesia electricity use went up 17 percent from the estimation of only 11 percent.

“A new record for Java and Bali with electricity consumption reached 18,970 megawatt last month. Every year electricity consumption rises by 3,000 megawatt,” said Dahlan.

PLN, said Dahlan, has been committed to guaranteeing energy distribution in the entire Indonesia. The effort taken to reach this goal is by realizing solar-powered electric plants in 100 islands.

Another effort is by connecting islands with undersea cables and using compressed natural gas during peak load.

PLN has also been making relay stations closer to nuclear-powered electric plants, renting steam powered electric plants to cut basic production costs, encouraging pre-paid electricity and issuing the policy of free electric capacity for affluent people who subscribe 450-900 VA capacity as well as shifting the peak load to midnight.
