VIVAnews - A team studying ancient catastrophes recommended that the installment of global positioning system (GPS) devices between the Sunda Strait and south coast of Java be accelerated.
This recommendation is a follow-up to the output of preliminary survey and the research on the earthquake potentials in Sunda Strait and the south of Java.
Thus the respective ministries and institutions including Meteorology and Geophysics Agency (BMG), Volcanology and Geologic Disaster Mitigation Center of Energy and Mineral Resources Ministry, National Survey and Mapping Coordinating Board, Indonesian Institution of Sciences (LIPI) and University of Indonesa were recommended to step up the installation of GPS stations in 20 to 30 locations.
The Ancient Catastrophes team also considered the recommendations of experts (Danny Hilman, Wahyu Triyoso, Yusuf Surahman, Andang Bachtiar, Irwan Meilano, Hamzah Latief and Rahma, a doctor candidate) and Bandung Intitute of Technology (ITB) team as well as 9 Earthquake Mapping Team chaired by Prof. Masyhur Irsyam.
This is also a follow-up to President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono’s suggestion of recalculating the earthquake potentials especially in Sunda Strait and south of Java.
As already reported, the earthquake potential in Sunda Strait, according to Engkon geologic agency’s study, could reach 8.5 on the Richter scale. Meanwhile Rahma, a doctoral student at Nagoya University) said that the potential could measure 8.7 on Richter scale and the United States Geologic survey agency calculated it to be 9.2.
Recalculation is necessary bearing in mind the large impacts, both material loss and human lives, of such earthquake potential as explained by Team 9 specifically to Jakarta.
“We welcome and appreciate the Jakarta provincial government’s initiative of microzoning and installation of detector devices,” said Erick Rizky, assistant to Humanitarian aid expert staff and coordinator of Ancient Catastrophe research team.
