VIVAnews - Data and Information Head of National Disaster Mitigation Agency (BNPB) Sutopo Purwo Nugroho said Mount Lokon’s volcanic activities were lessening. However, based on the results of visual and instrumental sensing, Mt Lokon still fluctuates.
As Mt Lokon resumes its normal state, hundreds of refugees were allowed to go back to their homes. Earlier, they had been staying in a refugee shelter in Tomohon city park.
"As many as 273 refugees can return to their homes. We call on people to be more cautious of the risk of Mt Lokon eruption," said Sutopo, in a written statement VIVAnews received on Monday, August 8.
Sutopo also explained that the people residing in Kinolow village I were prioritized to be equipped with communication devices and manual early warning tools, "such as speakers, bells, kentongan (wooden alarm)," said Sutopo.
The locals and tourists are also advised to keep away from Mt Lokon, "within a radius of 2.5 km from Tompaluan crater (the center of volcanic activity)."
BNPB also said there is still potential of eruption, based on the identification of vibrations. In case of eruption, the time and the intensity are not yet known.
Mt Lokon’s current status is maintained at ‘alert’, or level three.
