VIVAnews - Data and facts show that Indonesia is one of the most vulnerable countries in terms of natural disasters, compared to other countries in the world.

Head of Data and Information Center of National Disaster Mitigation Agency (BNPB), Sutopo Purwo Nugroho, said Indonesia has various types of disasters such as earthquakes, tsunamis, volcanic eruptions, floods, landslides, drought, and wildfires.

The data of the United Nations International Strategy for Disaster Reduction (UN-ISDR) shows that based on the exposure of the population in fatal areas prone to disasters, Indonesia has very high risks.

As regards tsunami, Indonesia is ranked first out of 265 countries worldwide, with 5,402,239 people who may be affected. "For landslides, Indonesia is also ranked number one out of 162 countries with 197,372 people affected," said Sutopo, Wednesday, August 10, 2011.

For earthquakes, Sutopo went on, Indonesia is ranked third among 153 countries with 11,056,806 people affected. "For floods, Indonesia ranked sixth of 162 countries with 1,101,507 people affected," he added.

Meanwhile, based on Risk Profile data cited in the Prevention Web site, Indonesia is relatively safe from drought, at the 36th position of 184 countries. Meanwhile, for cyclone, the archipelago is ranked 67th of 89 countries.

Indonesia also had to bear economic losses after consecutive disasters hit the country. BNPB’s data shows, the earthquake in Yogyakarta and Central Java in 2006 caused losses and damages valued at Rp27 trillion, the Jakarta flood in 2007 Rp4.8 trillion, West Sumatra earthquake in 2009 Rp21.6 trillion, and the eruption of Mt Merapi in 2010 excluding the impact of lava Rp3.56 trillion.

"Compare this with the cost to build Suramadu bridge, which was around Rp4.5 trillion and the JORR (Jakarta Outer Ring Road) phase II stretching for 122.6 kilometers of Rp5 trillion. The impact of the disasters has slowed down the development," said Sutopo.

In fact, said Sutopo, the government can only allocate disaster reserve fund each year amounting to around Rp4 trillion. Moreover the funds are used to mitigate all the disasters occurred in all over Indonesia.
