VIVAnews - A bomb exploded at Morotai District Parliament Building, North Maluku, Thursday, at 3 a.m. local time. The explosion could be heard from up to a radius of 4 kilometers and surprised residents.
There were no casualties due to the blast. However, the blast broke a window of the function room at the parliamentary building. National Police (Polri) Spokesman Insp. Gen. Anton Bachrul Alam, said it was a assembled bombs borrowing kerosene lamp tube. "But there's info that it’s a fishing bomb," said Anton at Polri HQ, Jakarta, Thursday.
Currently, according to Anton, the police have deployed a platoon of community control force (Dalmas) and the Police Mobile Brigade to examine the parliament building. "Now we are investigating it and gathering the witnesses," said Anton.
It is alleged that the explosion was related to the Constitutional Court’s (MK) decision of annulling the Morotai Islands Regional Election Commission’s (KPUD) declaration that elected Arsad Sardan and Damianus Ice regent and deputy regent. Both of them would actually be sworn in on Saturday, August 27, 2011. "Does (the bombing) have anything to do with this? We wait for the results of the investigation," he said.
Anton said, due to the incident, the police would tighten security, especially at the time of inauguration. "In case of another incident, we will maintain the security. We prioritize the date 27th (of August)," said Anton.
In the meantime, Anton said, the case is still handled by the regional police. "We entrust this to the police, including district police, because it's located in remote area, under the authority of North Halmahera district police," he said.
