VIVAnews – A moratorium on the sending of migrant workers to Saudi Arabia was called on as of August 1. However, migrant workers still sent quite an amount of remittances to their hometowns, which is close to that of 2010.

National Agency for Placement and Protection of Indonesian Workers (BNP2TKI) Protection Division said between January and June 2011, the amount of migrant workers’ remittances reached more than Rp28.5 trillion. On the other hand, the figure for 2010 hit Rp60.76 trillion.

"Apart from Bank Indonesia’s records, the estimate must be much higher since some workers also send money to their home through middlemen without banking services, including by entrusting the money to their fellow workers as well as individual courier services," said BNP2TKI Deputy of Protection, Lisna Yoeliani Poeloengan in a press release.

Lisna said, total annual remittances from the Indonesian migrant workers roughly comes at Rp100 trillion, either through banks or not.

Malaysia has been listed number one in the contribution of remittances surpassing Taiwan, Hong Kong, Singapore, Japan, South Korea, Brunei Darussalam and others to the total remittances of US$3.3 billion.

Middle East remittances are mostly contributed by Saudi Arabia. Followed by the United Arab Emirates, Jordan, Qatar, Kuwait, Oman and others.
