VIVAnews – A Malaysian couple received the F&N Outdo Yourself Award (OYA) for allowing their domestic helper, an Indonesian migrant worker, to complete her graduate school.

Tan Choo Tang, 56, and his wife Wee Phooi Kuan, 47, said they decided to let their employee, Sarmini Muhyadi, 28, to continue her study to increase her standard of living. Sarmini, from Banyumas, Central Java graduated from Open University Malaysia.

Her hard work bore fruits, when she was conferred the title and given the certificate last June. Now she no longer needs to be a migrant worker as she can work in a private company, holding an important position. The cost for Sarmini’s school was RM5,000 or around Rp14.4 million. The kind-hearted employer also financed it.

According to Tan Choo Tang, his wife and he were certain from the start that Sarmini had the potential to succeed. “She’s a hard worker,” he said as quoted in The Star, Thursday. “We supported her for four years, so that she would not give up.”

Sarmini only attended school every other Sundays. Everyday she worked and only after 9pm she studied for her college and in the morning after taking the employers’ children to school.

The noble couple was one of the seven awardees. Another awardee, Jonathan Jobal, 14, deserved a praise for his brave action of saving his cousin from fire.

Amid tragic stories regarding Indonesian migrant workers, Sarmini’s success of becoming a graduate in the neighboring country is like fresh air.
