VIVAnews – As many as 14,223 families in four regencies in Lombok Island, West Nusa Tenggara, are lacking clean water. Some residents of Sekaroh village, East Lombok have to walk as far as 3 kilometers to fetch pails of water.
Apart from East Lombok, three other regencies also experience clean water shortage such as West Lombok, Central Lombok and North Lombok.
The drought hitting several areas in Lombok Island this year is deemed worse than 2010. Some districts which have never undergone water scarcity now have to ask for clean water supply to the government.
The West Nusa Tenggara Province Social Affairs of Population and Civil Administration Service has distributed 630,000 liters of clean water for the need of 56,000 people in four regencies in Lombok Island.
The Social Affairs Service Head, Bachruddin said the clean water distribution was aimed to tackle water scarcity in several areas in Lombok Island following long drought.
Bachruddin said the government through the Social Affairs Service deployed three tanks with the capacity of 5,000 liters of clean water everyday. “We have even put one tank vehicle on stand by in East Lombok regency to meet the needs of clean water of eight villages. Two units are operated in West Lombok and Central Lombok, while for North Lombok it has been handled by the local government,” Bacharuddin told reporters in Mataram on Wednesday.
The officers prioritized supply of clean water for some secondary health centers located in a number of districts as secondary health centers in Sekaroh village, Jerowaru district, sees clean water shortage.
The clean water distribution, according to Bachruddin, will be ongoing until the rainy season comes. The Social Affairs Service is concerned that if the dry season lasts long, it would impact on wider territory needing clean water.
