VIVAnews - The waiting room in the terminal of Wamena Airport, Papua was totally ruined due to the fire that took place around 2.30 a.m local time today. Short circuit has so far been alleged of causing the fire. No casualties were found during the incident, but material losses are figured to have touched around Rp9 billion.
"Investigation is underway into what has been likely to ignite the fire. But initial assumption produced that the fire was originated from the quarantine room and taxi airport canteen prior to spreading out to the arrival and departure halls," said Papua Police Head of Public Relations Comm. Wachyono.
When the fire started to go uncontrolled, fire extinguishing was carried out.
"There have been efforts to extinguish the fire and the evacuation of properties from the airport building. But the fire, which continued burning the whole airport building, was unstoppable," he said. The fire could only be extinguished just before the morning, after the entire building was burned.
"The fire is hard to extinguish, and just this morning the location was secured and the team is examining the scene," he explained.
Meanwhile, Jayawijaya Police Chief Police Adjunct Sr. Comm. I Gede Sumerta Jaya said the police were still looking into the cause of the fire.
"We will bring forensic lab team from Makassar," he said.
