VIVAnews - As the regency closest to Mt Anak Krakatau, South Lampung is preparing the worst-case scenario to anticipate the increasing activities of Mount Anak Krakatau. In fact, the current alert level of Krakatau is on level 3 (out of maximum 4).

"We have been coordinating with all respective agencies. Even today, we have held a coordination meeting with the Health Office, Public Works Office and Disaster Management Task Force," Secretary of South Lampung Regency Sutono told VIVAnews.

"The district government set up a task force which is assigned in every district closest to Anak Krakatau. Emergency shelters in the villages are prepared. We’re recruiting people who want to volunteer to support the shelters," Sutono continued.

The number of task force members who have been trained for disaster response, according to him, was 60 people. While there are 12 trained health personnel of the team which work with health centers in each district.

The shelters are located at 42 points. Each has a telecommunication equipment or handy talky to disseminate the latest information on the activity of Anak Krakatau.

In addition, since one and half month ago subdistrict and village heads have been instructed to socialize to residents the condition of Anak Krakatau, of which the status was now ‘alert’ (level 3). "In addition, the subdistrict and village heads should make and socialize evacuation routes."

In addition, Sutono said, South Lampung regency has prepared warehouses for food stocks such as noodles. "Masks to tackle volcanic dust and equipment needed for evacuation are all set. The point is, our party is ready to anticipate disaster. We also improved the communication and information between posts, so they can better anticipate it," he stressed.

However, Sutono adviced people not to panic. "Because the activity of Anak Krakatau now is neither going to cause a tsunami nor an earthquake like they did in 1883 (when Krakatau erupted), even up to 50 years ahead," he said.

Previously, National Agency of Disaster Mitigation (BNPB) Head of Data and Public Relations Center, Sutopo Purwo Nugroho, said it is less likely that Anak Krakatau would erupt immensely. Let alone causing a tsunami that rumored to reach Jakarta. Not to mention Jakarta, the distance between the mountain and the coast in Lampung and Banten is about 40 to 50 kilometers. "So it less likely to be affected by a volcanic eruption."
