VIVAnews - Ministry of Information and Communications sets up a meeting with Police Crime and Investigation Division and some content providers following the theft of phone credits that have caused losses to cellular phone users.

"This will be our second meeting with the regulator," said the Ministry's spokesperson, Gatot S Dewa Broto today. Gatot said several consumers who have been victims of unsolicited services will also be invited to the meeting.

"Serious mapping on the issue is needed," he went on to say.

Gatot acknowledged that the Ministry has attempted to take immediate measures in response to certain telecommunication fraud. However, as for the theft of phone credits, this is the first case ever recorded, he said.

Minister of Information and Communications said earlier that mobile phone service providers that charge customers for unsolicited services could face sanctions.

On the other hand, a number of phone operators claimed that they have taken precautions to prevent their customers unwittingly having their phone credit deducted by short text messages (SMS) offering prizes and premium content.
