VIVAnews - Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) of Yogyakarta province estimated that cold lava flooding from Mount Merapi will likely hit the city of Yogyakarta by the end of December this year or early January 2012.
"With high rainfalls pouring down on Yogykarta, the potential danger of cold lava flooding to occur is very likely," said Head of Data and Information of BMKG Yogyakarta Tony Agus Wijaya, on Tuesday.
However, BMKG Yogyakarta figured that cold lava flood would not be as huge as it had been in 2010. This is because the rainy season in 2011 tends to be normal. "It was unlike 2010 where rainfall was quite high. Even during dry season rain still showered the city," said Tony.
This year's rain will mostly occur in Sleman, followed by Yogyakarta City, and the Bantul area.
"In fact, the region in slopes of Merapi will have rainy season earlier than other regions in Yogyakarta Regency," he said.
According to Tony, with the occurrence of rain in the region of Merapi, sand miners have to be careful. At those times, cold lava flooding could hit the area as the slopes of Merapi will be subject to long intense rainfalls.
"There was an incident of a sand truck buried by volcanic material due to Merapi cold lava flooding that came unnoticed by the miners," he said.
