VIVAnews - The National Commission for Women (Komnas Perempuan) calls for the government to ensure the repatriation of Indonesian migrant workers.

"As long as the protection system is not improved, problems on illegal migrant workers will recur," Komnas Perempuan commissioner, Tumbu Saraswaty, told VIVAnews on Monday.

Tumbu said as many as 5,206 workers have been sent home along 2011. "The actual numbers may be higher than the record says," she said.

Workers that have been subjects to mistreatment are commonly found holding no documents. They usually run away of their working places due to the misdeed.

Based on data collected between 2005 and 2010, 71 percent of Indonesian migrant workers were accounted of having the required documents.

"Most of the workers are victims. They're not against the immigration law," she said.

Tumbu said the government should in no time ratify the convention on migrant worker protection.
