Birth of Prof. Dr. Deliar Noer

VIVAnews - 83 years ago, today, Prof. Dr. Deliar Noer, MA, a celebrated author and former president of the State University of Jakarta (UNJ), was born.

Deliar Noer was born in Medan, North Sumatera, into a religious family. He completed his elementary and secondary school education in Tebing Tinggi, Medan and Jakarta.

After graduating from the National University (Unas) in Jakarta, Noer obtained Rockefeller Foundation scholarship and took a Master's and Doctoral degrees in political science at Cornell University. In 1963, a year after his graduation, Noer became a lecturer at North Sumatra University (USU) in Medan.

Two years later, due to his anti-communist activities, Noer was expelled from the university and appointed chief of foreign relation bureau at the Department of National Research. In the meantime, he also became a lecturer at the State Teachers College of Jakarta or IKIP Jakarta (now, UNJ) and the University of Indonesia (UI).

In 1967, Noer was appointed president of IKIP Jakarta, a position which he held until 1974, when he was expelled from the university due his criticism to the New Order regime.

In 1975, after he no longer worked for the government, Noer became a writer and a Research Fellow of the Australian National University (ANU). A year later, he became a lecturer at Griffith University in Brisbane, Australia, a position which he held until early 2000.

During his lifetime, Noer wrote dozens of books, mostly on Islam and politics. His most celebrated books were the “Modernist Muslim Movements in Indonesia (1900-1942)”, which was an adaptation of his dissertation, and “Muhammad Hatta: A Political Biography,” the most comprehensive study on the life of the first vice president of Indonesia to date. He also wrote his autobiography in 1996 with the title, “I am Part of the Muslims; I am Part of the Nation.”

Noer was the first Indonesian who obtained a doctoral degree in political science. It was him and Prof. Miriam Budiarjo who laid the foundation of political science in Indonesia.

Deliar Noer passed away in Jakarta on 18 June 2008, after suffering a heart attack, and was buried the next day in Karet Cemetaty, Jakarta.
