Unlocked Gate, Lion Escapes from Zoo
“Mr. Agus Purwanto was one of the park’s best keepers."
VIVAnews – A lion had escaped from its cage at Taru Jurug Zoo (TSTJ), Solo, Central Java, yesterday, Jan 31. Preliminary investigation shows that the lion got away because the keeper forgot to lock the lion’s cage.
“After knowing that the lion has escaped, the keeper was surprised and fell on his knee because he was so frightened,” said Director of Taru Jurug Zoo, Lilik Kristianto, to VIVAnews, today, Feb 1. He mentioned that the name of the careless keeper was Agus Purwanto.
“Mr. Agus Purwanto was one of the park’s best keepers. Other than caring for the lions, he was also responsible for the tigers,” said Lilik.
According to the procedures, after cleaning the cage, the keeper would feed the lion.
“It turned out that after feeding the lion, the keeper forgot to lock the lion’s cage,” said Lilik. When the keeper moved to clean the tigers’ cage, the lion was already outside its cage.
The lion named Oni ran towards the camel cage located about 30 meters from its cage.
“The lion immediately pounced on a baby camel,” said Lilik. However, when it happened, all visitors and hawkers were already evacuated.
“Then we isolated the lion,” said Lilik. The wildlife park is still looking into the case.
The careless keeper was then sent home to calm himself down. “The chief officer ordered Mr. Agus to take a day off so he can calm down after yesterday’s incident,” said Lilik.
Meanwhile, the attacked camel finally died in the afternoon because of excessive bleeding.
“We actually have prepared a medical team to treat the camel,” he said.
