Reckless Drivers Rise Number of Accidents

VIVAnews – The Jakarta Directorate of Traffic announced that most accidents that claimed the lives of people in early 2012 were caused by driver’s negligence. 

Head of Jakarta Traffic Security & Safety Sub Directorate, Adj. Chief Comm. Yakub Dedi Karyawan, said the main cause of these accidents was the driver’s loss of concentration. 

“Other conditions on drivers that often caused accidents are sleepiness, drunkenness, tiredness, lack of skill, lack of discipline and use of cell phones while driving,” said Yakub in Jakarta on Monday.

To date, Tugu Tani accident in Central Jakarta killed nine pedestrians because the driver lost her concentration. The car was driven at high speed and became difficult to control. 

“The condition of the environment may also influence the driver’s attitude.  The more ordered the traffic is, the calmer the drivers will be in controlling their vehicles,” he said. 

Data of accidents during the first two months of 2012 stated that in January, 634 out of 654 accidents were caused by drivers. 261 accidents were caused by driver’s negligence. 

Meanwhile, in February, 624 out of 634 traffic accidents were caused by driver’s negligence.  277 accidents were caused by disorderly drivers. 

Police stated that some of the traffic accidents that gained the people’s attention early this year were caused by reckless drivers. 

In the Tugu Tani accident, the driver, Afriyani Susanti, hit dozens of pedestrians and killed nine people as she was driving under the influence of alcohol and drugs. 

Similarly, two Mayasari Bakti bus accidents in February were caused by a driver who was using his cell phone while driving while the other driver admitted that he was sleepy. 

Last is the Nissan Juke accident that hit an advertisement board until it burnt down in Jalan Jenderal Sudirman was also caused by the driver’s (Olivia Dewi) negligence who drove her car at high speed.
