VIVAnews – Deputy Minister of Energy & Mineral Resources (ESDM), Widjajono Partowidagdo, suggested the government and the related stakeholders such as state-run oil and gas company PT Pertamina and state gas company PT Perusahaan Gas Negara Tbk allocate subsidies for buyers of converter kits.

The idea, according to Widjajono, is to accelerate the conversion program of oil fuel use (BBM) to gas fuel (BBG).

Widjajono said the current prices of converter kits are varied between Rp 9 million and Rp 12 million per unit. Therefore, it is recommended that the buyers of converter kits are subsidized by Rp 6 million and the remaining can be paid by consumers in installments via banks.

“Of the Rp 6 million, the government will grant the subsidy by one-third, converter kit companies will assist by one-third, and Pertamina will provide support by one-third. If PGN wants to join in, it would be better,” said Widjajono on Wednesday.

The remaining Rp 6 million, he added, could be paid by the buyers of converter kits via banks. The buyers only have to pay Rp 500 thousand per month.  “Car owners wouldn’t refuse when it’s already so much cheaper than oil fuel,” he said.

Widjajono said that stakeholders will initially feel the pain in channeling the said subsidies. But then, as gas fuel users will grow the companies will receive greater profit.

Meanwhile, a member of Commission VII of the House of Representatives, Satya Yudha, explained that as long as the people’s demand is not addressed, taking the Ministry of Industry’s policy which still supports the sales of oil fuel-based cars as example, the conversion is not going to happen.

“It’s all to suppress the subsidy policy of the Ministry of Energy & Mineral Resources. Therefore, we called for the Coordinating Minister for the Economy to think it over comprehensively,” he said.
