“In several talks earlier, the President of Kazakhstan is giving Pertamina a significant opportunity to get Kazakhstan’s oil fields,” said Coordinating Minister for the Economy, Hatta Rajasa, in Jakarta, on Friday.

Hatta explained Kazakhstan has huge potential of oil fields. At the moment, the nation produces 1.6 million barrels of oil per day and is going to increase to two million barrels per day by 2013. “[The country]'s population is only 17 million,” said Hatta.

Hatta’s statement is related to the visit of the President of Kazakhstan, Nursultan Nazarbayev, to President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono today.

He said Pertamina will have direct discussions with a partner, an oil & gas company in Kazakhstan, which will also be followed up by the Minister of Energy & Mineral Resources, Jero Wacik.

“The President said directly to me to give the opportunity to Pertamina, directly go to the Minister of Energy and we see this very seriously,” he said.

In relation with the offer, President Director of Pertamina, Karen Agustiawan, said the offer has drawn up Pertamina. The oil and gas company plans to acquire oil fields that have produced more than 50,000 per barrel. “We want this upstream cooperation for the assets above 50 thousand barrels,” Karen said.

Karen has not been able to shed more information on which assets targeted by Pertamina in Kazakhstan because Pertamina has not received the nation’s oil fields data.
