VIVAnews - State-electricity company PT Perusahaan Listrik Negara (PLN) will proceed with the development of renewable energy to boost the electrification ratio number and reduce fossil-based fuel dependency. One of the measures taken is by utilizing solar potential and developing Solar Power Electricity Center (PLTS) in the outer islands of Indonesia.

The latest progress being recorded is that PLN operates an eco friendly power plant, namely the hybrid PLTS with the capacity of 600 kilo Watt peak (kWp) in Daruba, Morotai Islands, North Moluccas, which will be the largest PLTS operated by PLN.

PLN Director of Operations in Eastern Indonesia, Vickner Sinaga, officiated the operation of PLTS Morotai last week.

“This is the largest PLTS operated by PLN nationwide. It’s expected that the plant is able to boost the economy of Morotai residents,” said Vickner in a written statement on Monday.

With the operation of this PLTS, PLN could cut down the use of fuel-based fuel by 800 liters per day or equal to Rp2.5 billion per year.

PLN will improve electricity supply in Indonesia by prioritizing the development of alternative (non-fossil-based fuel) power plants, especially in the eastern regions of Indonesia.

Earlier, PLN consecutively operated 350 kWp PLTS in Sebatik, East Kalimantan and 100 kWp PLTS in Miangas Island, North Sulawesi.

The operation of these PLTS is a part of the company's program to provide electricity in 100 outer islands of Indonesia by fully making use of solar power and targeting full operation before the Youth Pledge Day on October 28, 2012.

PLN is also targeting to provide solar-powered electricity to 1000 outer islands throughout the nation by 2014. In addition to reduce fossil-based fuel use, the program is also intended to support the government’s program through the Ministry of Energy to implement green and clean energy policy.
