VIVAnews – Indonesia still depends much on fossil-based fuel. The growing economy in turn boosts the nation's fuel consumption.

Data from state oil and gas Pertamina shows that until the end of April, the realization of subsidized fuel distribution reached 14.1 kiloliter, 10 percent higher from last year’s. As to non-subsidized fuel, Downstream Oil and Gas Regulator (BPH Migas) said the growth also hit 10 percent.

In the upstream sector, Upstream Oil and Gas Regulator (BP Migas), said Indonesia’s oil production has in fact declined. During the peak of production in 1996, the production reached 1.6 million barrels per day, while the current production only hit 890 thousand barrels per day.

BP Migas Operational Control Deputy, Rudi Rubiandini, said that since 2003, Indonesia has resigned from OPEC due to the shifting status as oil net importer following the increasing domestic demands.

At that time, the production of Chevron Pacific Indonesia (CPI) was 1 million barrels per day, but now it has descended to 350 thousand barrels per day.

The actual condition of the company’s largest supporting field in Minas was shocking. The oil production has resulted in 98 percent of water with only two percent of oil.

The main solution to keep back the decline in oil production is by spotting large fields, such as Duri and Minas fields.

However, Indonesia today only relies upon Banyu Urip Field in Bojonegoro, which may only supply 165 thousand barrels per day.

However, Indonesia still has gas reserves five times larger than oil which will last for 46-50 years.
