“It is an old story. In 2004, had we received a complaint from Changi Airport, Singapore. There are many Indonesian fishermen in the Straits of Malacca,” said Head of Information Center and Public Relations of Ministry of Information and Communications, Gatot Dewa S Broto, in Jakarta, on Thursday.

The ministry proposed additional special frequency for shippping lines to the WRC (World Radio Communication) ITU.

“We're proposing separate frequencies for sea voyages,” he said.

The issue, according to Gatot, has long been a concern of the ministry. In fact, in a WRC ITU’s forum in January, the ministry has altogether addressed issues on the allocation of special frequency for the fishermen.

“We need support from other countries for the approval. Indonesia will do the diplomacy later,” he said.

Radio frequency which intercepts flight frequency is considered minor disturbance. However, Gatot expected the problem can be either minimized or eliminated so as not to interfere with flights.

“So, if we take action against it, it will be based on firm legal basis. Everyone wants proper usage of frequencies,” he said.
