A Prominent Indonesian Economist was Born

VIVAnews – 64 years ago, today, on 24 February 1945, Prof. Dr. Syahrir, MA was born in Kudus, Central Java, into a well-to-do family. His parents, Ma’amoen Al Rasyid and Roesma Malik, both of Padangese descent, were former high-ranking government officials.

Syahrir completed most of his elementary and secondary school education in Jakarta. After graduating from Canisius College High School in Jakarta, Syahrir attended University of Indonesia (UI) and graduated in 1973 with a degree in economics.

During his study at the university, Syahrir was famous among his colleagues as a prominent student activist. He was an active member of the Djakarta Students Association (IMADA), general secretary of the Student Senate at the Faculty of Economics, University of Indonesia, and chairman of United Actions of Indonesian Students (KAMI).

In January 1974, Syahrir, who has just graduated from the university, was ready to leave the country after obtaining a scholarship for a master's degree at Harvard University. However, he was involved in mass student protests which later turned into a riot (the famous Malari Incident). As a result, he was arrested and sentenced to 6.5 years in prison.

In 1977, Syahrir was released after serving almost four years. The Ford Foundations, who sponsored his scholarship four years previously, was more than ready to offer him another opportunity to study abroad. In 1983, Syahrir graduated from Harvard University with a doctorate degree in Political Economy and Government.

After his graduation, Syahrir returned to Indonesia and became a lecturer at his alma mater. Later, after the downfall of Soeharto in 1998, Syahrir became once again active in the country’s politics.

In 2001, the father of two married to Dr. Nurmala Kartini Syahrir founded an organization called Perhimpunan Indonesia Baru or New Indonesia Alliance (PIB) which a year later evolved into a political party with the same name.

At the same time, Syahrir was active in several organizations such as Economics and Financial Research (Ecfin) and Yayasan Padi & Kapas. He had also worked as a consultant and advisor to several state-owned banks and public companies.

In 2004, Syahrir and his party (PIB) participated in Indonesia’s General Elections and won 0.6% of the popular vote but failed to win any seat in the parliament. A year later, Syahrir was offered a position in the new government and became a special economic advisor to President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono.

Syahrir had written dozens of books, mostly on economics, including “Ekonomi Politik Kebutuhan Pokok, Sebuah Tinjauan Prospektif,” “Analisis Ekonomi Indonesia,” and  “Ekonomi Politik Indonesia.”
