Solo to Rehabilitate Heritage Buildings

VIVAnews - The Solo government, Central Java, plans to rehabilitate heritage buildings in the city, which is, among other, Kampung Batik Kauman in the traditional market Pasar Kliwon, Solo.

"The [heritage] buildings will be rehabilitated to actualize 'The Future Solo is the Old Solo'," said the head of Solo City Planning Agency Augs Djoko Witiarso in a press conference on Wednesday, April 1.

The physical work of the rehabilitation project will start on August 2009. "The Solo government has allocated Rp 1.06 billion (US$138,390) out of the 2009 regional budget [APBD]," Witiarso added. Besides funding the heritage buildings conservation, the government is going to restore the infrastructure in Solo's heritage area.

Before running the project, the government through the City Planning Agency plans to make socialization since the heritage buildings conservation will not be successful without the participation from the buildings' owners and local community, Witiarso explained.

The socialization will discuss the plan to make Kauman area as Kampung Santri (Muslim students village) due to the area's history which is known not only as batik development area, but also a place for Muslim students.
