US Blacklists Indonesia

VIVAnews - The United States has blacklisted Canada, Indonesia, and Algeria as regards intellectual rights violation.

Meanwhile, China and Rusia are still atop the list of countries having the most copyright violation cases.

“During this unstable economic condition, we encourage our trading partners, including our closest neighboring countries to intensify and protect copyrights”, US Trade Representative Ron Kirk said, as quoted from Australian newspaper, The Age, Thursday, April 30.

This is Canada’s first time to be included on the list. The decision to list the country is based on the concern about copyright violation cases that could arise in the country, while the inclusion of Indonesia and Algeria on the list reflects the diminishing recognition towards copyrights in the two countries.

192 cases of intellectual rights violation occurred between July and December 2008. 112 cases were handled by the police and 80 cases were handled by the Court. Out of 112 intellectual rights violation cases handled by the police, 106 cases involve copyright violation, three cases involve brands, and three cases involve industrial design rights.

There were also 80 cases of intellectual property rights violation committed by the Constitutional Court. The cases involve 61 copyright violations, one trademark rights violations, two industrial design rights violations, and 15 brand rights violation.

In Indonesia, copyright issues are specified in Law no. 19/ 2002 on Copyright.
