Indonesian Military Receives Highest UN Medal

VIVAnews - Indonesian Military (TNI) Commander General Djoko Santoso awarded the UN Dag Hammarsjold medal to the late Marine Technique Colonel Sondang Doddy Irawan. The medal is a form of honorary award for Colonel Irawan’s service as a UN peacekeeper.

The award was received by Colonel Irawan’s wife, Ms. Purwanti at the TNI Headquarters’ Serene Room in Cilangkap, Jakarta on Tuesday, June 23.

The Dag Hammarsjold medal is the highest form of tribute given by the UN to the peacekeepers who died during the mission.

The late Colonel Irawan leaves a wife and two children: 9-year-old Sondang Eko Irawanto and 4-year-old Dwisari Meirawati.

On March 3, 2008, Colonel Irawan (graduated from the Navy Academy in 1998) died in a UNMIN helicopter accident in Nepal.

On May 29, 2009, the UN awarded the Dag Hammarsjold medal to the troop representatives of contributing countries whose peacekeeper personnel died in the 2008 UN’s mission. As reported, there were 132 personnel from 48 countries died during the mission and Colonel Irawan was one of them.

His medal was given by the UN Secretariat to the UN’s Indonesian Permanent Representative (Watapri) in New York, RM. Marty Natalegawa. The medal will later be handed over to the TNI Peacekeeping Mission Center (PMPP) on June 29, 2009.
